sheet metal gauge chart.

Gauge-to-thickness for steel, stainless and aluminum in inches and millimeters — plus how to read gauge and pick the right material for your part. A quick reference from Southern Perfection’s fabrication team.

Reference

Gauge to thickness (steel, stainless, aluminum).

Sheet metal gauge is an inverse scale — a higher gauge number means thinner metal — and the thickness for a given gauge differs by material. Standard (carbon) steel uses the Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge, stainless has its own scale, and aluminum follows the Brown & Sharpe (B&S / AWG) scale.

Values are standard references (thickness in inches & mm). For production, specify the exact decimal thickness on your drawing — mill tolerances vary by supplier and material.

How to use it

How to read sheet metal gauge.

Find your gauge in the left column, then read across to your material for the thickness in inches and millimeters. Because the same gauge is a different thickness in steel, stainless and aluminum, always confirm which material a gauge refers to. When you send a drawing for sheet metal fabrication, list the decimal thickness or the gauge and the material so cutting on our TRUMPF fiber laser and bending on the press brake match your intent exactly.

FAQ

Sheet metal gauge — answered.

How do you read a sheet metal gauge chart?

Gauge is an inverse thickness scale — the higher the number, the thinner the metal. Look up your gauge in the material column to get thickness in inches and mm. The value differs by material, so match gauge to the right metal.

Is steel, stainless and aluminum gauge the same?

No. Carbon steel uses the Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge, stainless uses its own scale, and aluminum follows Brown & Sharpe (B&S/AWG) — so the same gauge number is a different thickness in each.

What gauge is 1/8″ steel?

About 11 gauge in standard steel (0.1196″). For exact fabrication, specify the decimal thickness on your drawing rather than gauge alone.

What sheet metal thicknesses can you fabricate?

We cut, form and weld a wide gauge range in steel, stainless and aluminum on a large-format TRUMPF fiber laser and a press brake to 230 tons. Send a drawing and we’ll confirm fit and quote.

Need it cut, formed and welded?

Send a drawing — we’ll come back with a real price and lead time.
