Welding is the process of permanently joining two pieces of metal by melting them together, usually with an added filler metal that fuses into the joint as it cools. Almost every fabricated metal assembly — a frame, a bracket, a guard, a machine base, a rack — depends on welds to carry load and hold geometry. Choosing the right welding process, filler, and shielding for the material and the application is what separates a weld that merely holds from one that is strong, clean, repeatable, and inspectable.
The three arc-welding processes you will encounter most often in a fabrication shop are MIG (gas metal arc welding, or GMAW), TIG (gas tungsten arc welding, or GTAW), and robotic or automated welding, which most commonly runs a MIG process under programmed control. Each has a distinct sweet spot in speed, control, material, and volume.
